Part 3 of 4 The Bloomberg Businessweek article that alleged that Iowa did not want to clean up its water problem by choice, cited Iowa’s’ high cancer rate as a consequence. Again…the link is bogus. Cancer has touched virtually all families in Iowa, some more than others. I had a grandmother that died young from liver cancer long before atrazine or glyphosate existed. Both my grandfather and father had prostate cancer but neither case was serious enough to be their cause of death. My father died from pulmonary fibrosis which was a farm environment related condition. I had two best friends who both suffered from pancreatic cancer. Both were in the rare category that survived. One came from a family who has a serious genetic connection to cancer. Ironically, he was killed in a tragic farm accident. His gravestone is beside mine in our local cemetery. The other, who survived, is now a Mayo Clinic test case. The cancer went into remission but more surprisingly, he had no side-effects from treatment. He rides RAGBRAI.
