It rained on the family farm in SE Brazil last night for the first time since the dry season began about 5 months ago. Forecasts continue to show rainfall building in Brazil’s Center West region in mid-October but have yet to provide the general soaking showers needed to give farmers the greenlight on moving full speed ahead. There have been isolated showers popping up in certain regions allowing for some eager growers to get a start, but they have been scattered showers rather than the desired widespread rains. Mato Grosso state is off to their slowest pace in 5 years. We spoke with one large operation in Central Mato Grosso that had nearly 25% planted already. This particular operation plants a lot of second crop cotton, and so they have been risking poor soybean germination by planting “in the dust” to make sure the second crop of cotton that follows it has ample time to grow. Previous rainfall forecasts showed Mato Grosso precipitation filling in by October 10th. Now it looks like it got pushed back a few more days, beginning early next week around October 14th.
